Fascias are used for capping the roof rafters feet outside the building protecting them from rot and to fix the guttering. The finished surface below the fascia and rafters is called the soffit or eave.

Traditionally fascia and soffits were constructed from painted timber. The downside being that regular maintenance is required to avoid these rotting, due to access difficulties with most properties the work is labour intensive and therefore costly.
